If an owl comes at you

Protect your head

Owls strike from behind and above, usually at the head. Wear a hat or hood, or carry an umbrella or a bag you can raise overhead.

Leave the area — don't fight back

Attacks are almost always defensive, near a nest or roost. Walk away steadily, wave your arms overhead, and pick a different route for the next few weeks. Owls are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so never harm or harass them.

Be extra careful at dawn and dusk

Most swoops happen in low light. If you run or walk campus early or late, avoid pinned hotspots and skip the headphones so you can hear wingbeats.

Got scratched?

Wash the wound with soap and water and get it checked. Talon punctures can get infected. Report the injury to Nike Security and campus health services.
